ABS Setters: Top of Their Game at Nationals
USA Climbing would like to extend a huge thank you to the route setters of the ABS National Championships held recently in Boulder, Colorado.
Open Chief Setter, Kynan Waggoner lead USAC professional setters Jamie Emerson, Chris Danielson, Scott Mechler and Kyle McCabe with forerunning help from Johnny Hork, to construct some of the most creative and challenging problems US climbers have ever faced.
In addition to setting problems that would separate the strongest climbers in the country, they also were working with a new scoring system adopted from the IFSC World Cup circuit. Using this “Zone” system the crew deftly handled separating the field and ended the comp with no ties.
Also that same weekend was the ABS Youth National Championship.
Youth Chief Setter Mike Helt ran his National Setters, Jeremy Hardin, Kyle Mrohs, Luke Bertelsen and Intern Matt Hulet through 7 long days and nights of setting challenging kid friendly problems that ranged in style from full dynamic power to slab-tastic.
The crew deftly juggled the technical and creative aspects of setting for the strongest young guns in the country.
In the end the Youth crew held 4 successful and exciting super-finals to break ties in D, C and A categories.
